Where is Coral Bay on Perhentian Kecil?

Perhentian Kecil has two main tourist beaches facing opposite directions. Long Beach (Pasir Panjang) faces east and gets the sunrise, the surf and the nightlife. Coral Bay faces west, so it gets flat water and the sunset. The two are connected by a short jungle path over the hill, roughly a 10 to 15 minute walk. Many travellers sleep on one side and eat dinner on the other.

Coral Bay itself is small. A stretch of sand, a concrete jetty, a handful of restaurants and dive shops, a mini market or two, and chalets built right up against the treeline. That is the whole village centre. If you want a beach where you can hear the water instead of a speaker, this is the side to choose.

Coral Bay or Long Beach?

This is the decision most people are actually trying to make, so here it is plainly. Coral Bay is the quiet side. Long Beach is where the bars, the music and the late nights are. Coral Bay closes down early, the water is flat, and the loudest thing after dark is usually the movie playing at Ombak.

Choose Coral Bay if you are travelling with family or young children, want calm water and sunsets, prefer an early night, or are here mainly to be on the boats and in the sea.

Choose Long Beach if you want nightlife, a wider choice of restaurants and bars, and a bigger crowd of other travellers to meet.

You do not have to pick one and never see the other. The two beaches are a short walk apart, so plenty of people sleep on the quiet side and cross over for dinner.

How to get to Coral Bay

Every trip to the Perhentians starts at Kuala Besut jetty. From there, speedboats run to the islands and drop passengers at their beach or resort. Ask for Coral Bay and the boatman will bring you to the jetty here. From Kuala Lumpur the drive is roughly 7 to 8 hours; from Kota Bharu airport (KBR) it is about an hour and a half by taxi.

Two costs to budget for on the way in:

Marine park fee: RM30 per person, paid at Kuala Besut jetty. Everyone pays this, local and foreign.
Return boat ticket: around RM70 per person for the speedboat transfer.

The islands run seasonally. Most businesses here, including ours, operate from around February until the end of October. Outside that window the monsoon closes the island down.

Resorts and chalets at Coral Bay

Accommodation at Coral Bay runs from simple fan chalets to proper resorts. Nothing here is huge, and that is part of the appeal. Rooms, prices and availability change season to season, so always confirm directly with the property before you travel.

Resorts

Senja Bay Resort - the best known place on the bay, sitting right on the sand with a beachfront restaurant. Air-conditioned and fan rooms, family rooms available. The water in front of Senja is one of the best spots on the bay to snorkel straight off the beach, and blacktip reef sharks are a common sight there.
Ombak Dive Resort - a dive centre with rooms attached, popular with divers who want to roll out of bed and onto the boat. Two things worth knowing: the water directly in front is quite coral-heavy, so it is better for snorkelling than for wading in and out - bring reef shoes. And at night they screen movies on a big screen, which has become one of the few evening things to do on this side of the island.
Shari-La Island Resort - the most resort-like option on this side, with its own private beach and a swimming pool. Breakfast is included in most rates. Good choice if you want facilities rather than backpacker simplicity.
Alunan Resort - not on the bay itself but nearby at Petani Beach, on this side of the island. Quieter again than Coral Bay, and a good choice if your priority is peace rather than being near the shops and dive schools.
Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa - the luxury option, on its own private beach just north of Coral Bay. Worth understanding before you book: it sits apart from the village, with its own restaurants and facilities, so you are not in walking distance of the Coral Bay strip in any casual sense. Guests who want to get out and see the reefs usually arrange a boat trip separately - we take a lot of Marriott guests out, picking them up and dropping them back at the resort.

Chalets and budget stays

OceanBoys Chalet Coral Bay - one of the newer builds, set back from the beach, air-conditioned and clean.
Maya Guesthouse (Maya Chalet) - long-standing budget favourite, simple rooms and a relaxed common area.
Butterfly Chalet - basic wooden chalets, backpacker pricing.
Fatimah Chalet - fan chalets, straightforward and cheap.
Coral Bay Chalet - another simple option in the village centre.
Aur Bay Chalet - proper old-school budget chalet. Basic, no frills, and priced accordingly. This is Coral Bay the way it was twenty years ago.
Dinamie Glamping & Chalet - glamping tents and chalets tucked in behind Ombak Dive Resort, a little different from the standard wooden huts. Long-time visitors will recognise the spot: this is the old Ewan Place site, home of the much-loved Ewan Cafe. It was a simple kampung kitchen with a menu and a reputation that beat half the resort restaurants on the island. It has since passed to new tenants, and plenty of us here still miss it.

A quick honest note: the island is not a city. Some places run generators, hot water is not guaranteed, and Wi-Fi comes and goes. Come expecting island conditions and you will have a much better time.

How to walk from Coral Bay to Long Beach

This is the walk almost every visitor does, and it is easier than people expect. Follow it landmark by landmark:

Start on Coral Bay beach and walk past Ombak Dive Resort.
Head inland on the path behind it - you will come out beside Dinamie Glamping & Chalet.
Keep going and you will pass Tropicana Inn.
From there the path leads straight down to Long Beach.

It takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes at an easy pace. Wear sandals or shoes rather than flip-flops if it has been raining, bring mosquito repellent, and carry a torch (or use your phone) if you are walking back after dinner - there is no street lighting on the path.

Water taxis from Coral Bay

If you would rather not walk, water taxis run from the Coral Bay jetty to Long Beach, Petani, the fishing village and across to Perhentian Besar. Just turn up at the jetty and ask. Fares depend on how far you are going, so agree on the price before you get in - that way nobody is surprised at the other end.

One small request from us. The boatmen here work a short season, roughly February to October, and the income has to carry them through the rest of the year. The fares are already low by any standard. Please do not push hard to knock a few ringgit off - the money goes straight into island families, and paying the asking price is one of the easiest ways to support the community you came here to enjoy.

What to do at Coral Bay

You can snorkel straight off the beach here, and the stretch in front of Senja Bay Resort is the pick of it - one of the better shore-snorkelling spots on Perhentian Kecil, with blacktip reef sharks passing through regularly. They are harmless and shy, and far more interested in avoiding you than anything else. Go at high tide, keep your fins clear of the coral, and do not chase them. The other reason people love Coral Bay is the evening: the sun drops directly into the sea in front of you, and half the bay walks out onto the sand to watch it. After dark it stays quiet - no clubs, no beach parties - though Ombak Dive Resort screens movies on a big screen most nights, which is about as lively as this side of the island gets. Beyond that, expect kayaking, dive courses, beach volleyball, and the short walk over to Long Beach for dinner.

The serious snorkelling is out on the boats - Shark Point, Turtle Point, Fish Point, Rawa Island, and the quieter corners around Perhentian Besar that most day trips skip.

Course prices, schedules and languages spoken vary, so it is worth walking into a couple of them and asking before you commit. Most run Discover Scuba sessions for complete beginners as well as full Open Water certification.

To be clear about what we do: we are a snorkeling and boat trip operator, not a dive centre. If you want tanks and a certification, talk to the shops above. If you want to be out on the water seeing turtles, sharks and reef fish without any training, that is us.

Our Coral Bay booth: currently closed

Perhentian Private Snorkeling by Mat & Man has had a booth at Coral Bay for years, and many of you know exactly which kiosk. Our booth was destroyed in the fire in April 2026, so it is closed while we rebuild and renovate. Please do not walk to Coral Bay expecting to find us at the counter.

The good news: the boats are running as normal. We are based at Kampung Nelayan, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, and we still pick up guests from the Coral Bay jetty as well as Long Beach, Petani, the Marriott, and across Perhentian Besar. Nothing about the trips themselves has changed - only the way you book. For now, everything goes through WhatsApp.

How to book a snorkeling trip from Coral Bay

Private boat - up to 12 passengers, your group only.
Sharing trip - minimum 4 passengers.
Payment - cash on the island. There is no ATM anywhere on the Perhentians, so withdraw what you need at Kuala Besut or Kota Bharu before you board the boat. No deposit for standard bookings; a 50% deposit applies to large groups and peak dates.
Book early - 2 to 4 weeks ahead is sensible, especially for weekends and school holidays.
Bad weather means we reschedule your trip rather than cancel it.

Coral Bay is still one of the nicest places to base yourself on Perhentian Kecil - easy boat access, sunsets every evening, and a short hop to everything else on the island. Pick your chalet, message us your dates, and we will meet you at the jetty.
